Where Electrical Faults Come From

Vibration, heat and moisture are the three enemies of any electrical system on a machine, and Nevada supplies the first two in abundance. Most faults we find are connection problems rather than failed components.

Pressure, temperature and position sensors drift before they die outright, producing codes that appear and clear. Testing under load catches what a static scan misses.

Alternator and battery problems that present as no-start, derate or random fault codes. Always worth ruling out first, because low voltage makes every other system behave strangely.

Why the Expensive Part Is Usually Innocent

Controllers and ECMs are among the costliest parts on a machine, and they’re also among the most often replaced without cause. A code naming a controller circuit usually means something in that circuit is wrong, and the controller is the least likely candidate.

We test the harness, the connectors, the grounds and the sensor before we ever discuss replacing a module. Sometimes the module has failed, and we’ll say so. But it should be the conclusion of a diagnosis, not the opening bid.

Electrical diagnosis is priced by time, because that’s honestly what it consumes. Here’s what makes one fault quicker to find than another.

Intermittent vs Constant

A permanent fault can be traced directly. An intermittent one has to be reproduced first, which takes longer and is exactly the work most shops skip before condemning a controller.

Circuit Complexity

A lighting fault is a short job. A CAN bus communication fault across multiple controllers takes a lot longer, because the symptom can originate anywhere on the network.

Access to the Harness

Some harness runs are easy to reach. Others sit behind panels, under cabs or inside booms, and getting to them is a meaningful part of the labor.

Repair vs Replace

A splice and seal on a damaged section is inexpensive. Full harness replacement is a large job. We repair wherever a repair will hold.

It’s possible, but it’s also the single most over-diagnosed repair in heavy equipment. Before spending that money it’s worth having the harness, grounds, connectors and sensors in that circuit properly tested. A second opinion on an ECM quote costs a fraction of the part.

Those are the hard ones and they’re exactly where methodology matters. We capture live data under load and wiggle test harnesses to reproduce the fault rather than waiting for it to reappear on its own. It takes longer than reading a code, which is exactly why so many shops skip it.

We repair wherever a repair will hold, which is most of the time. Full harness replacement on heavy equipment is expensive and labor intensive, and a properly executed splice and seal at the damaged section lasts the life of the machine.

The code identifies a circuit that’s reading outside expected parameters. It doesn’t identify which component in that circuit is responsible. Codes are the starting point of a diagnosis, not the conclusion, and treating them as the conclusion is what leads to replacing perfectly good parts.

Yes. A no-start is diagnosed from the charging system, batteries, cables, grounds, starter and fuel side in sequence. Most no-starts turn out to be power delivery rather than the expensive components people fear.
